The island is small enough that nowhere on it is much more than an hour from anywhere else, and varied enough that where you base yourself changes the whole trip. Douglas puts you on the promenade with the ferry terminal, the horse trams and most of the island's hotels. Peel is the west-coast fishing town with the castle, the kipper smokehouse and the sunsets. Port Erin and Castletown hold the quiet south, Ramsey the quiet north, and Laxey sits in a deep green glen halfway between the two.
We list 89 places to stay in total — hotels, apartments, guest houses, holiday homes, B&Bs, hostels, camping — and each one links through to its own Booking.com page, so photographs, guest scores, dates and prices are always the live ones rather than a number we copied down months ago.
Not sure yet? The map further down puts every property and every landmark on the island side by side, and the 35 places worth going will tell you which end of the island you actually want to be on.

Before you book
Isle of Man accommodation, answered
- Where should I stay on the Isle of Man for a first visit?
- Douglas, for a first trip. The ferry docks there, both railway lines and the bus network start there, and it holds roughly half of the island's accommodation, so there is real choice. Peel suits a quieter west-coast base with the castle and the harbour on the doorstep, and Port Erin or Castletown suit the south. Nowhere on the island is more than about an hour from anywhere else.
- How many nights do I need?
- Three to four nights covers the headline places without rushing — Peel Castle, the Laxey Wheel, Snaefell, Castle Rushen and a stretch of the coastal path. A week lets you add the Calf of Man, the southern cliffs and the Manx Electric Railway end to end, and gives you room to lose a day to weather.
- Do I need a car on the Isle of Man?
- Not necessarily. The island has an unusually good public transport network for its size — the steam railway to the south, the Manx Electric Railway to the north, the Snaefell Mountain Railway, the horse trams along Douglas promenade and a bus network reaching most villages. If you are basing yourself in Douglas, Peel or Port Erin you can manage without one. A car helps for the glens, the west coast and the far north.
- When is the Isle of Man busiest?
- TT fortnight, at the end of May and start of June, is in a category of its own — accommodation across the whole island is booked up far in advance and minimum stays are common. The Festival of Motorcycling in late August is the second peak. Outside those, June to September is the steady summer season and the island is quiet from November to March.
- What kinds of accommodation are there?
- Seafront and town hotels concentrated in Douglas, serviced apartments across the towns, traditional guest houses and B&Bs, self-catering holiday homes and cottages in the villages and glens, hostel beds in Douglas, and a campsite at Glen Wyllin on the west coast. Every listing here links to its own Booking.com page for live photographs, guest scores, dates and prices.
- How do I get to the Isle of Man?
- By air into Ronaldsway, the island's airport near Castletown, with routes from several UK and Irish cities; or by sea on the Steam Packet ferry, which sails to Douglas from Heysham and Liverpool, and seasonally from Belfast and Dublin. The ferry carries cars, which is the usual reason to choose it.
